Tuesday Traffic Tidbit – Bicycles & The Law

According to the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code Section 257 bicycles are considered vehicles in Michigan and must obey the same traffic laws as a motorist including obeying stop signs and stop signals.

Bicyclists must ride with the direction of traffic (pedestrians walk against traffic) and must utilize the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway (as close as practicable) unless passing another bicycle, preparing to turn left, if the edge of the roadway is unsafe due to surface hazards or obstacles or if upon a 1-way street that has 2 or more marked traffic lanes in which case the bicyclist may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of that roadway as practicable.

Watch for more bicycling tips for riding legally and safely in future posts. For more information on “What Every Michigan Bicyclist Must Know” visit the League of Michigan Bicyclists at www.LMB.org.
