At approximately 1:00 p.m. today, the Michigan State Police Bridge Card Enforcement Team working in conjunction with the Flint Area Narcotics Group, Strike Team Investigative Narcotics Group, the US Department of Agriculture, Michigan State Police Houghton Lake Post #75 and the Gerrish Township Police Department executed search warrants at the Northwinds Motor Lodge and the Northern Steak Company which is located in Roscommon, Mi. In addition to the search warrants, Officers also executed arrest warrants for the proprietors of the motel and the Steak Company. The warrants are a result of a 6 month investigation into the activities of the proprietors who are alleged to have been conducting fraudulent EBT (Electronic Benefit transactions) in which they purchased over $1733 in SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance) benefits in exchange for cash and motel rooms on multiple occasions. The Northern Steak Company which is adjacent to the motel is a participating retailer of the EBT and SNAP program. The investigation revealed that from July of 2009 to September of 2010, the amount of SNAP fraud attributed to the listed businesses exceed $97,000.00. This case will be handled by the Roscommon County Prosecutor’s office as the proprietors face multiple felony charges which included conspiracy to commit a criminal enterprise, food stamp fraud and welfare fraud. The largest penalty for these charges is 20 years in a State prison.
