SAR Awards Presented Today to Sgt. LaBonte & Officer Scroggin

Sons of the American Revolution Recognize Gerrish Officers with Life Saving Awards

Representatives from the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) attended the Gerrish Township Special Work Session today to present Life Saving Awards to Sgt. Norm LaBonte and Officer James Scroggin.

The quick and selfless actions of these two Officers resulted in the rescue of two subjects who had capsized their kayaks in the deep, cold waters of Higgins Lake on May 28, 2019. The subjects did not have life jackets on and were barely clinging to a sinking kayak when the Officers reached them on a Jet Ski and Pontoon boat that they retrieved from a lake front resident who also assisted in the rescue.

The approximate water temperature at the time of the incident was 49 degrees F and the air temp was 60 degrees F. The very weak and cold subjects were treated on scene for hypothermia by Gerrish EMS and released to their grateful family members.

Congratulations to both Officers as they received the highest award possible from SAR. They also received Departmental Life Saving Awards last summer for their heroic efforts.
