Gerrish Twp Police Department collected unwanted medicine during the National Prescription Take Back Initiative on September 25th, 2010. We are very excited with the response and thrilled to have seen over 10 pounds (over 10,000 pills) of unneeded medicines removed from cabinets and drawers around homes. Community members were encouraged to drop off unwanted or expired prescriptions for safe and proper disposal. The police department collected the unwanted pills and turned them over to a representative from the Drug Enforcement Administration for incineration in a closed system. Too often, we may think that prescription medications may not be dangerous, but they are prescribed for specific health problems and could be very harmful if taken by someone other than who it is prescribed for. Community members were very happy to be able to dispose of the pills in a safe manner.
During the take back, several boxes of products containing pseudoephedrine, which is a precursor
substance in making Methamphetamine were also dropped off.
