Life Saving Awards Presented to Sgt. LaBonte & Officer Scroggin

At last night’s regular Gerrish Township Board Meeting, Chief Hill presented Life Saving Awards to Sgt. Norman LaBonte and Officer James Scroggin. They were recognized for their actions on duty on May 28, 2019 in response to a Water Accident/Near Drowning call in which they swiftly located a pontoon boat and a jet ski and rescued two kayak victims in the deep waters of Higgins Lake between Treasure Island and the Hawthorn Trail shore area. Both victims, in their 30’s, were not wearing life jackets and their kayaks capsized and were sinking. The air temperature was approximately 60 degrees and the water temperatures was approximately 48 degrees.

Both subjects were brought in to shore to waiting Gerrish Twp. EMS crews and they were treated on scene for hypothermia and released to their grateful family.

Thank you for your swift actions and going above and beyond the call of duty. Congratulations to both officers on receiving this distinguished award. This is the highest award a police officer can receive and it is Officer Scroggin’s first Life Saving Award and Sgt. LaBonte’s third Life Saving Award in his 18 year career.
