Due to increased traffic and visitors to the South Higgins Lake State Park, Officers from State and local agencies increased patrol in the park and waterways around this area. On July 4th and 5th, Officers from the Gerrish Twp Police Department, Roscommon County Sheriff’s Department, Troopers from the Michigan State Police, Houghton Lake, Department of Natural Resources and Park Rangers from the South Higgins Lake State Park patrolled the beach and waterways.
A total of 440 personnel hours were spent patrolling the park and lake in the two days span. Enforcement emphasis was focused on safety in the area and youth alcohol enforcement. Officers from the above agencies issued the following citations;
21-Minor in Possession of Alcohol violations
1-Furnish Alcohol to Minor
2-Gross Indecencies in Public violations
1-Resisting and obstructing Police Officers
2 Arrests on outstanding warrants
Stepped up patrols in OWI (Operating while intoxicated) Enforcement occurred by the Roscommon County Sheriff Dept, Gerrish Township Police Department, Richfield Township Police Department and the Michigan State Police and the result was a total of 7 OWI arrests for the weekend. The increased patrols were funded through grants received from the Office of Highway Planning specifically designed to address OWI and Youth Alcohol Enforcement.
