2011 PRESCRIPTION PILL DROP
04/30/11 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m
Prescription Drug Collection a Success
On 04/30/2011, the Gerrish Township Police Department collected unwanted or expired prescription drugs during the National Prescription Take Back Initiative. Community members were encouraged to drop off unwanted or expired prescriptions for safe and proper disposal. We were very excited to have seen over 8 pounds (over 10,000 pills) of unwanted or expired prescription drugs that were removed from cabinets and drawers around homes. The police department collected the unwanted pills and turned them over to a representative from the Drug Enforcement Administration for incineration in a closed system.
Too often, people think that prescription medications may not be dangerous, but they are prescribed for specific health problems and could be very harmful if taken by someone other than who it is prescribed for. During the take back, several boxes of products containing pseudoephedrine, which is a precursor substance in making Methamphetamine (METH) were also dropped off. These pills along with others are now being destroyed instead of falling into the wrong hands. The Gerrish Township Police Department is currently working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in an attempt to establish the Gerrish Township Police Department as a permanent prescription drug collection site.

SNOWMOBILE / ATV POKER RUN
The 1st Annual ACT NOW Snowmobile/ATV Poker Run was a success in spite of the weather conditions. The run started and ended at the Gerrish Twp. Community Park Marina.
About 25 sleds, ATV's and even autos participated in the event. The participants traveled around Higgins Lake, stopping at designated check points to pick up playing cards. Prizes were awarded for the best poker hands at the end of the run, along with the worst hand drawing and many great door prizes were given away thanks to the 28 local businesses and organizations that made donations to support the event.
A HUGE THANK YOU to the committee that organized the event, which consisted of Gerrish Twp. Clerk Jodi Valentino, Gerrish Twp. Trustee Gary Long, Officer Erin Kelley and ACT NOW members John Klein and Al Schultz. Their event planning and execution are to be commended and we are looking forward to all of their help and participation in our 2nd Annual Poker Run in 2012! This event raised approximately $1200 for the Gerrish Township Police Department's Annual Trunk or Treat & Haunted Trail, which hosted over 400 visitors last Halloween and we are expecting to top that number at this year's event!

Gerrish Township Winter Disaster Mock Scenario
2009
On Saturday, 2-28-09 Gerrish Township Emergency Services and the Roscommon County Central Dispatch conducted it's yearly winter table top exercise. This year, the exercise was conducted at the Roscommon Middle school and had four components of exercise. The first being a simulated small plane crash on the frozen waters of Higgins Lake, an adjacent house fire, a lost child on Treasure Island and an overcrowded staging area situation to handle. Participants included the Gerrish Township Police, Fire/EMS, Gerrish Township CERT team as well as the Roscommon County Central Dispatch. Scenes were held in different rooms where each discipline could discuss their response and plans of action as well as resource allocation with a Mentor. Below are photos of the group at various times in the scenario. Live radio traffic was used to test communications. A complete debriefing was also conducted at the conclusion of the event.
